Commencement 2015 Glance Back

Love triumphs at Providence College commencement

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Darlene Love made history at the Ninety-Seventh Commencement Exercises at Providence College on Sunday, May 17, 2015, concluding her Commencement Address by singing a portion of the gospel hymn “My Tribute (To God be the Glory)” to a standing ovation.

On the 40th anniversary of the first graduating class to include women, Love received an honorary doctor of music degree. During the ceremony, held at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in downtown Providence, the College presented 1,156 diplomas to the Class of 2015 — 878 to undergraduates, 225 to students in graduate programs, and 48 to students in the School of Continuing Education (SCE).

Honorary degrees also were awarded to Dr. Henry C. Foley ’77, who majored in chemistry at PC and now is executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Missouri System; JaneLunin Perel, one of PC’s first female professors, co-founder of the Women’s Studies Program, and now professor emerita of English and women’s studies; and Kevin C. Phelan ’66, a Boston businessman, community leader, and former long-time PC trustee and benefactor.

Rev. Gustavo Gutiérrez, O.P., a Dominican priest credited with coining the term “liberation theology” to describe how Christians should respond to governments and social systems that oppress the poor, received his honorary degree on April 27, when he presented the Rev. Edward Cleary, O.P. Memorial Lecture at the College.
