2009 Undergraduate International Student Welcome Program
The Center for International Studies (CIS) hosts a Welcome Program each year for all new, undergraduate international students prior to the general Freshmen Orientation. The Welcome Program is led by Katherine Jacobs, International Student Advisor, and the Welcome Program Coaches (see below), and assisted by various other PC staff.
The 2009 Undergraduate International Student Welcome Program will be held from 30 August to 2 September. Students must arrive at Providence College between 12pm and 4pm on Sunday, August 30th for check-in.
All new international students are required to attend the Welcome Program.
What will I do at the Welcome Program?
In addition to getting settled in your room, meeting your fellow international freshmen, and acclimating to Providence College in general, you will:
- Meet staff who will be integral to your success at PC (deans, academic services, security, etc).
- Have individual counseling for setting up an American bank account through Sovereign Bank
- Learn about the rules and regulations of your F-1 student visa
- Go on a shopping trip for dorm room necessities with help from the coaches
- Have all meals provided for you

Meet your Welcome Program Coaches!
Mitchell Barker '12
Major: History/Secondary Education
Nationality: Australia / Hometown: Hong Kong
Mitchell is a member of Rejects On The Rise improv comedy group, and opened for comedian Ben Hague last year, as well as being a member of the PC track team. A member of the Australian Army Cadet Corps in Australia, Mitchell has also coached fencing in Hong Kong, and is an avid fan of old time movies. Mitchell’s favorite things about PC are the great theatre department, and McPhails.
Tinacho Chitongo '10
Major: Political Science
Nationality: Zimbabwe
Tinacho is entering his senior year at PC. He is majoring in Political Science and he is looking into furthering his studies within the field of International Relations in Graduate school. Tinacho is looking forward to the opportunity of helping fellow International students settle in here at PC. He has managed to be involved on campus, and he recently completed a two year stint as a Resident Assistant in the traditional dormitories.
Johara Hall '12
Major: Global Studies
Nationality: Morocco
Johara is a fan of traveling around the world and has been to several western European countries. She is very much interested in international relations and learning different languages. She also enjoys swimming under the warm Moroccan sun. Although the weather in Providence is starkly different from what she is used to, Johara has been able to experience the snow for the first time in her life and loves it. Johara wants to be a coach to make the transition for new international students smoother, easier, and more fun!
Ana-Maria Sima '12
Major: Finance
Nationality: Romania
Ana-Maria is a member of next year’s 60th Student Congress, Friar Lectern, International Students Organization and Liberal Arts Honors program. Her favorite place in the campus is the pond at the back of Dore Hall. In her spare time, she loves shopping at the Providence Place Mall and watching soccer games. She wanted to become a coach because she wants to meet all the new international freshmen and find out all about the awesome places they are coming from.

Coming to the United States
Know what to expect at the Port of Entry when you arrive in the United States!
If you're arriving at Boston Logan International or New York (JFK or LaGuardia) Airports:
Providence College is located approximately 48 miles (80 kilometers) from Logan Airport in Boston and 192 miles (320 kilometers) from JFK International Airport in New York. The best way to get to PC from Logan or JFK is by train or bus followed by a short taxi ride.
If you're arriving at TF Green Airport:
Providence College is located approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) from TF Green Airport (domestic flights only) in Warwick, RI. The best way to get to PC from TF Green is by taxi.
Getting to Providence College
The most convenient way to get to Providence College from the Providence Amtrak Station, TF Green Airport, or any Providence Bus Station is by taxi. You should tell the taxi driver to enter the college through the main entrance on River Avenue, and take you to Harkins Hall (the security guard on duty at the entrance can point it out). The Center for International Studies is located on the 3rd floor of Harkins Hall in room 336. There will be signs to help you find us!
All international students must check in between 12pm and 4pm on Sunday, August 30 . Once you have checked in we will help you get to your dorm room to rest and unpack before the Welcome Program begins.
