Samantha McVay '08 - Florence, Italy

Spring 2007

Audrey LeBrun '08 - Galway, Ireland

Jaime Tirrell '08 - Florence, Italy

Elyse Connors '08  -

Elyse writes the following from Florence:

Italy is absolutely fantastic.  I can't get over the fact that I am living in a foreign country.  The lifestyle is very different and takes a little bit of getting used to but it has been a great experience.  At first I was a bit nervous about life in general but I have settled in quite a bit and feel a lot more comfortable. I am taking High and Late Renaissance art for my Art History minor.  Its great because instead of only looking at slides of all the art, we actually get to take field trips to museums and whatnot to see the real thing! Ciao for now!

Fall 2006

Melissa Silvanic '08:

I have had really great classes this semester...American Literature Until 1865, US History 104, American Government and Politics, and Civ. My professors have been great and this semester has made me excited to be an American Studies major. My classes all connect and I have never learned so much. Every day, I take things I learn in my history class and use them to help me in my English class and Political Science class. I think this is the beauty of the American Studies major because it takes the very large idea of American culture and history in general. The classes involved build upon one another and I am so happy with my decision in this major.

I will be going to Prague, Czech Republic in the fall for the semester. I will be stMelissa Silvanic '08udying at Charles University, which is the oldest university in central Europe. We live in dorms with other American students as well as Czech students, so it will be very interesting trying to get over the language barrier. A Czech language class is required during a two week orientation. I will also be taking art history courses (for my minor) and a class called "American Literature from a European Perspective. "

I am so excited to live in Prague as well as travel around other parts of Europe as much as possible!

Fall 2005

Caitlin Ferrarini '07:  Semester at Sea

I spent the fall 2005 semester on a program called Semester at Sea.  I traveled on a cruise ship, which was converted into a mini university, for one hundred days.  Along the way I spent four or five days in ten countries, the countries I visited were Venezuela , Brazil , South Africa , Mauritius , India , Myanmar , Vietnam , Hong Kong , China , and Japan .  It was an incredible journey which is beyond words.  Some of my favorite experiences were staying with host families in India and Japan .  I just received a postcard from the family in Japan , and these cross cultural friendships mean so much to me.  It was extremely difficult to witness first hand the extreme poverty in nearly every country, and I have become so much more aware and thankful for the privileged position I am in.  If anyone would like to talk further with me about my trip around the world I would be happy to share more with you.  My email is cferra07@providence.edu>.
