American Studies Sponsored Events 2006-07: 

Spring 2007

Monday, March 26th, from 5:00pm until 6:00pm in Moore Hall, Dr. Margaret M. Manchester, Assistant Professor in the History Department and Director of the American Studies Program, will give a PowerPoint talk on the Verin Case, a case from colonial Rhode Island involving domestic violence, liberty of conscience, and church/state relations.  The talk is in honor of Women's History Month and is co-sponsored by Women Will and the Women's Studies Program.

Wednesday, March 28th, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., in '64 Hall, the Balfour Center for Multicultural Affairs and the Campus Chapter of Students Organized Against Racism (S.O.A.R.) will sponsor a presentation by Tim Wise.  Author of White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son and Affirmative Action: Racial Preference in Black and White, Tim Wise is among the most respected anti-racist writers and educators in the United States , having spoken in 48 states and on over 400 college campuses.  He recasts the debate over race-based affirmative action policies and examines the breadth and depth of the racial privilege within institutions such as education, employment, housing, criminal justice, and healthcare. American Studies is proud to co-sponsor Tim Wise's talk at Providence College

Friday, May 4, 2007 from 4:00-6:00pm, Annual Celebration of American Studies. 

This year, twenty-two members of the class of 2007 will do their senior presentations.  The concurrent panels will be followed by a dinner celebrating the achievements of the American Studies majors at Providence College.

Professor Douglas Little, author of American Orientalism: The United States and the Middle East Since 1945 will give a talk on the recent policies of the Bush Administration on. Co-sponsored by:  American and Global Studies Programs, History and Political Science Departments, the History Club, and the Middle Eastern Student Association. 

 

“Me and the Mosque”

Monday, October 23, 2006 at 4:30pm in Feinstein Function Room 400

A documentary about the historical role of women in Islam and the difficulty some Muslim women have in gaining access to the mosque. It features interviews with scholars as well as the personal stories of both men and women. Dr. Charlotte O’Kelly, Professor of Sociology and Acting Director of the Women’s Studies Program, will facilitate discussion after the film.

Co-sponsored by American Studies, Women’s Studies and Global Studies Programs, History and Sociology Departments, History Club, and the Middle Eastern Student Association.

The immigrants among us:  A roundtable of students, faculty, and staff at Providence College and their unique immigrant experiences.  Facilitated by Dr. Margaret Manchester, Director, American Studies Program.

“The Fence”

Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 4:00pm in Moore Hall II

A documentary by filmmaker Alexandre Trudeau who spent a season working and living with families in Israel and in the West Bank will be viewed.  The film is a tale of families on opposing sides of the security barrier in the Jenin-Afula area.  A discussion will follow.

“The Immigrant Experience in Rhode Island

November 9th, 7 PM, Moore Hall III

William Shuey, Executive Director, and Ellen Gallagher, Outreach Coordinator, from the International Institute of Rhode Island will be giving a lecture on immigration in the US & Rhode Island - the stats, the laws, the history, and how it affects us.

“The Golden Venture and US Policy”

November 15th, 7 PM, '64 Hall

This documentary chronicles the ongoing struggles of passengers who were aboard the Golden Venture, an immigrant smuggling ship that ran aground near New York City in 1993. Passengers had paid at least $30,000 to be brought to the U.S. from China 's Fujian Province , expecting to arrive indebted but unnoticed. But a seemingly golden opportunity quickly evolved into a hellish descent through the cruel whims of U.S. immigration policy.
