Mary-Ellen Sposato-Rogers
Founder and CEO of Work/Life Innovations in Wethersfield, Conn.
Graduated PC: 1977

PC Degree(s): B.A. in Social Work

PC Activities: Big Brothers & Sisters, Ski Club, Social Work Student Organization (founder and first president), Ring Weekend Committee, Commencement Committee

Career Path:  After graduation, Sposato-Rogers held two social work positions and then joined The Travelers Insurance Company Group in Hardford, Conn., in 1978. After two years as a business analyst in the Group Department, she moved to the company’s human resources department, where she directed a portion of staffing and recruiting—and all of work/life—from 1980-86. She then worked part-time from 1986-92 while she began a solo consulting business to help people deal with work/life balance issues.

After a nationwide company asked her to set up a work/life resource and referral program for its employees, Sposato-Rogers expanded her consulting business into Family Care and Workforce Diversity Consultants in 1992 with the help of fellow social work major Louis Sanzaro ’77, now company president.

Today, the company has a new name—Work/Life Innovations—and a staff of nearly 30 people. It assists companies in offering their employees resources to help them balance their lives at work and at home, which results in more productivity in the workplace. Truly a company that reflects the times, Work/Life Innovations helps its clients’ employees deal with dozens of issues, such as coping with natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, psychiatric illness, caring for children while assisting elderly parents, and job relocation.

Sposato-Rogers is most proud of her company winning the Alliance for Work/Life Progress Innovative Excellence Award in both 2003 and 2005, and of being named one of “Eight Remarkable Women In Business” for 2006 by the Hartford Business Journal.

Family:Spouse, Michael J. Rogers ’76, and children, Michael Rogers, Jr., S.J.; Francis Rogers; and Mary-Kathryn Rogers.

Staying Involved: Member of the Providence College Board of Trustees; active member of the Hartford Alumni Club; organized freshmen reception for the club; and former area representative on the Alumni Association’s National Board of Governors.

Memorable Quotes:  “Every moment at Providence had such an impact on my life—the Catholic spirituality, the wisdom of the Dominicans, the strength of the Social Work Program, and the many friendships . . . Providence College is the ultimate metamorphosis!”
