What if I don't know what I want to study?
Date:  2009.08.01

Don’t worry – you are not alone! National Statistics show that most students enter college undecided about a major and that it’s a normal part of the college process. At Providence College , almost 50% of each incoming class consists of undeclared students. Also, it is common for students to change their major at least once during their college careers.

Take time to think about your interests, abilities, and values. These areas give you a place to begin considering possible majors. You can also check out the course catalogs of colleges you are applying to, which will describe majors and courses in detail. Talk to your teachers and guidance counselors about career possibilities that match your interests. Don’t forget friends and family – they can offer a wealth of advice and information, too.

Once you arrive at college, you will have many resources to help you decide on a major. Most colleges are set up to guide undeclared students through strong early advising and programs specifically designed for undeclared majors. Many institutions encourage undecided students to enter as undeclared majors and to explore many different subject areas before deciding on a major sometime during their sophomore year. You never know – you could take one class that could change your academic plan completely!
