How do I determine which college is the best match for me?

With literally thousands of colleges and universities around the country and the world, you have a lot of choices. And just like there’s not a perfect car for you, there’s probably more than one college or university that will offer just about everything you want.

Start by discussing your goals and interests with your high school guidance counselor. He or she should be able to begin matching your information with colleges that could be a good academic or personal fit for you.

The best way to determine whether a college is a good match is to visit campus. Go during the academic year when classes are in session so you can get a feel fo what college life is like and be able to sit in on a few classes. A summer visit can be valuable, too, allowing you to roam and explore a less crowded campus. Discuss your goals with financial aid and admissions staff, get the inside scoop from current students, dine in the cafeteria or the favorite student hangout, talk to professors in your field of interest. If you can, stay overnight in a residence hall to gain a complete perspective.

For many high school students, a campus visit is the most important step in the college search. If you can see yourself attending classes and living on campus for the next four years, chances are you’ve found the college that fits you best.
