Providence College faculty, staff, and students took part in the recent Martin Luther King Week celebration, "Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On . . . Not a Day Off."
Many gathered at the kickoff event to watch a screening of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech and listen to a panel discussion about its meaning and message. The Providence College panel, which was moderated by Dr. Eric L. Hirsch, professor of sociology and department chair, included remarks by Dr. Carol B. Crafts, associate dean of undergraduate studies, and Isaiah Davis, a member of the class of 2010.
The discussions of Dr. King continued with the presentation of a two-part video series. The series featured screenings of Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Personal Portrait, which discusses whether violence can be used to achieve peace, and American Playhouse: The Meeting, which addresses what an imaginary meeting between Dr. King and Malcolm X might have been like.
The celebration ended with the annual tribute to Dr. King in St. Dominic Chapel. College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. read parts of Dr. King's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," offering personal interpretations.
"I was pleased with the week's activities and response by the College community," said Dr. Edward Twyman, dean of multicultural affairs in the Balfour Center for Multicultural Affairs and a member of the MLK Week planning committee. "We tried to use the discussions and films to give students a broader sense of what Martin Luther King was about."
