Midfielder Michael Farley ’06 (Westfield, N.J.) of the Friars’ men’s lacrosse team was selected to the 2006 U.S.I.L.A. Division I Men’s Lacrosse Honorable Mention Team on May 28, becoming the first player in program history to earn that honor.
Farley put an exclamation point on a fine career this season by leading the team in scoring and propelling PC to its second NCAA Tournament appearance in three seasons. His 33 goals, 10 assists, and 43 total points all represented single-season highs for Farley. He also earned All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) First-Team honors and was chosen to the MAAC All-Tournament Team.
Farley and the Friars finished the season with a 10-8 record, highlighted by winning the MAAC Tournament Championship. PC thereby qualified for the NCAA Tournament, where it lost in the first round at third-seeded Hofstra, 14-8.
Four Friars qualify for NCAA track meet
In another spring sports highlight, four members of the Friars’ women’s and men’s outdoor track teams have qualified for the NCAA Division I Championship on June 7-10 in Sacramento, Calif. They are Mary Cullen ’06 (Sligo, Ireland) and graduate student Aine Hoban (Wakefield, England) of the women’s team and Martin Fagan ’06 (Mullingar, Ireland) and Max Smith ’08 (Dunedin, New Zealand) of the men’s team.
Cullen, a five-time All-American in track and cross country, qualified in the 5,000-meter run and the 10,000 but will run the 5,000 only at the NCAAs. Hoban, meanwhile, qualified in the 10,000.Fagan and Smith will run the 10,000 and the 1,500, respectively, at the NCAA meet.
Meanwhile, the softball team finished the 2006 season with a 29-19-1 record after being edged by the University of Notre Dame, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on May 13 in South Bend, Ind.
The women’s tennis team compiled a spring-season record of 6-12 to end the 2005-06 year with an 8-13 record.
