More than 50 Providence College alumni and students joined forces with the City of Providence's Parks Department on Saturday, April 26, 2008 to continue work on an ambitious restoration project at the Esek Hopkins Homestead at 97 Admiral Street, Providence.

The unique partnership with city officials--developed by the College's President's Council--began last year and is designed to facilitate networking and service opportunities among students, alumni, College neighbors, and members of the greater Providence community.

The Council is a leadership group, comprised of senior executives from many of Rhode Island's most prestigious employers, who serve in an advisory capacity to College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. 

Dubbed "Friars United for Service In Our Neighborhood"--FUSION--the effort matches current Providence College undergraduates with volunteers from the President's Council, young alumni/alumnae who graduated between 1997 and 2007, regional Alumni Club leaders, and members of the National Alumni Association Board of Governors.

Built in 1754, the house was the residence of Esek Hopkins, first Admiral of the United States Navy and the only naval officer to hold the title of Commander-in-Chief. In addition to its historical significance, the property has the potential to be widely used by the community. This year's project will focus on the restoration of the adjacent soccer field for use by multiple neighborhood sports leagues. Working with City employees, the volunteers will lay sod and complete related tasks. Future plans include establishing a research center and museum.
