Requirements & Timelines for Freshman and Transfer Applicants

Timelines / Notification                                                                             (en español)

All of the different elements of your application allow the admission staff to get to know you, and help us determine which students will be an excellent match for the learning environment at Providence College. In order to be considered for admission, we require that you submit a completed Common Application, including the Providence College Supplemental Form, and an application fee of $55. (Applicants who require an application fee waiver may petition for one through their college advisor). We also require the following additional pieces as part of your application package.

For students applying as Freshmen:

  • Secondary School Report and high school transcript(s): Officially we recommend that students complete a minimum of 4 years each of English and mathematics, 2 years of social studies, 3 years of one foreign language, and 2 years of a laboratory science. However, students in recent years who have been most competitive for admission have taken 4 years in all major subject areas, taking advantage of honors or advanced level courses available at their high schools.
  • Recommendations: We require one from your guidance counselor or college advisor, and one from a teacher of your choice. Additional recommendations may be submitted if you feel they can add relevant, insightful information about you.
  • Personal essay: With the Common Application, you have several broad choices for the required essay. Use this piece of writing to not only illustrate your writing skills, but also to share something personal about yourself with the admission committee. With the essay we are trying to evaluate your communication skills as much as trying to get a glimpse of your personality.
  • Standardized Test Scores: Submission of standardized test scores (SAT I or ACT) is optional for all students applying for admission. The academic review for admission at Providence College has always been focused on each student's high school performance rather than standardized test results. This test-optional policy allows each student to decide whether they wish to have their standardized test results considered as part of their application for admission. Additional details about the policy can be found on the Test-Optional Policy Frequently Asked Questions page of the website. View statement regarding Score Choice.
    • English is the language of instruction at Providence College. You must be able to understand English and express yourself clearly in speech and writing. Students whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Minimum scores: 550 (PBT), 213 (CBT), or 80 (iBT). You can check the TOEFL website at http://www.toefl.org for testing information. Providence College's CEEB/TOEFL code is 3693.
    • The International English Language Test System (IELTS) may be taken as an alternative to the TOEFL. Minimum score: 7.0. You can check the IELTS website at http://www.ielts.org for testing information.  IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

For students applying as Transfers:

  • Official high school transcript(s)
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended.
  • College Official's Report, which must be completed by a college or university official.
  • Providence College Supplemental Form
  • Course descriptions for all courses you wish to have considered for transfer to Providence College. These descriptions may be taken from your college catalog or the college's website.

The Committee on Admission gives recognition to students with different talents, contrasting backgrounds, and geographic origins. Admission is without regard to race, color, sex, handicap, age, and national or ethnic origin. In addition, our admission process is need-blind.

For the Class of 2013, 8,364 students applied for approximately 980 spaces, making the admission process highly selective. Therefore, it is important that you spend time carefully preparing your application, and presenting the most complete portrait of yourself. Remember, these required elements are your tools to make yourself stand out among the entire applicant pool.

For freshman applicants, the application must be submitted by November 1 if you are applying under the Early Action program, or by January 15 if you are applying for Regular Decision. Late applicants for Regular Decision will be considered at the discretion of the Dean of Enrollment Management on the basis of availability of classroom and residence hall space.

For transfer applicants, the completed application must be submitted by December 1 for January admission and by April 1 for September admission. Again, note that late applications are considered on an individual basis.

If you are a United States citizen and wish to apply for financial aid, Providence College requires that you submit both the College Scholarship Service Profile (CSS Profile) and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ). For further information regarding Financial Aid including deadlines, please visit the Undergraduate Financial Aid web pages.

Notification

Candidates under our Early Action Program will receive formal notification of their entrance status (acceptance, denial, or deferral) typically by early January. A small number of students who are not directly accepted as Early Action candidates may be deferred to the Regular Decision applicant pool for consideration in March. Students who are denied admission at Early Action may not reapply for Regular Decision. All Regular Decision candidates will receive their admission notifications by April 1 (acceptance, wait list, or denial).

Spring transfer notification is rolling. Transfer applicants can expect an admission decision approximately 2 to 4 weeks after the application is complete. Fall transfer notification begins in mid-May and continues as applications become complete. As is the case with our freshmen applicants, a decision of acceptance, deferral or denial can be made. Deferral is a common practice whereby the Committee on Admission elects to wait for coursework in progress to be completed, and within five business days of the receipt of final grades, students can expect a final admission decision.

For students applying for January semester consideration, the Committee on Admission sometimes recommends the completion of a full year's study prior to further admission consideration. This is also a deferral, yet differs from the deferral process noted above.  In such instances, the committee has determined that for sound academic reasons, the student is better served by waiting for admission consideration for the September entry semester. The student is notified in writing of the committee's decision and is given an option of progressing with review for admission consideration for the September term or withdrawing the application for further consideration.
