Multiculturalism at PC is ...

  • Developing an individualized major that combines a study of the globalization of U.S. cities with organization, migration, and ethno-racial diversity in politics, in society and the economy -- and a Black Studies minor.
  • Trying to raise awareness of the cultural diversity -- Vietnamese, Laotian, Chinese, Cambodian, Hmong -- among Asian groups.
  • Working together with other students to perform more than 2,000 hours of community service through the Balfour Center's outreach programs.
  • Discovering that white and black students are members of the Asian American Club -- or that African American students serve as Peer Mentors for white students.
  • Studying the diversity of women's experiences across age, race, ethnic groups, and social class through a minor in Women's Studies.
  • Learning to deal intelligently in today's multicultural world by becoming immersed in the Asian Studies, Black Studies and/or American Studies programs.
  • Exploring the experience of Native Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans. African Americans, and European Americans in classes like Ethnicity and Social Diversity in America; Race and Ethnic Relations, Strangers in the Land: The Immigrant Experience in America, and Post-Colonial Theory and Literature.
  • Becoming part of a team of student delegates representing Guatemala in the Edgar Maya Model Organization of American States simulation in Washington, D.C.
  • Attending lectures by guest speakers, such as David Lamb, author of African American and Latino literature, and Hispanic writer Esmeralda Santiago.
