The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers programs of study leading to the degrees of bachelor of arts or bachelor of science in chemistry, as well as a bachelor of science in biochemistry.

Chemistry

The bachelor of science program in chemistry is a rigorous one designed to provide in-depth training in all areas of chemisty for those students with a strong interest in research or graduate school.  The program is certified by the American Chemical Society for students in all classes through the Class of 2004.  Beginning with the Class of 2005, students must take CHM 309 (Biochemistry) as one of their electives to receive a certified degree.

The bachelor of arts program in chemistry is an extremely flexible one with fewer required courses in chemistry and mathematics, offering a wider scope of elective course opportunities to allow students to tailor a program to meet their individual needs.  This flexibility permits additional undergraduate preparation in other diverse areas such as business and economics, biology, mathematics, English, or education.  Within the context of the bachelor of arts program, a number of dedicated programs have been developed which prepare students seeking to enter certain specialized careers.

• The Pre-Medical/Dental Option is designed to prepare students intending  to pursue careers in medicine and dentistry.
• The Secondary Education-Chemistry Teacher Option is designed to provide training in all areas of chemistry for those seeking careers as high school chemistry teachers.

The B.A. and B.S. programs may also be combined with a variety of other academic majors and minors including biology, mathematics, and business studies.

Participation in an undergraduate research project guided by members of the faculty is strongly encouraged in all programs in the junior year and/or in the senior year.  Students may also conduct research either on- or off-campus during one or more summers.

The Major
A major is offered in chemistry leading to either the bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree.  In addition, students may pursue the bachelor of arts in chemistry/secondary education or the pre-medical/dental option.

Biochemistry

The bachelor of science degree program in biochemistry is a rigorous course of study which combines the chemistry courses required for the bachelor of arts in chemistry program with selected courses in biology and biochemistry.  The biochemistry degree program is excellent preparation for students interested in medical and dental school as well as students interested in graduate school in biochemistry or molecular biology. 

The program may also be combined with a variety of other academic minors and majors including  biology,  mathematics, and business studies.
