Transfer Credit

Students applying for admission to a baccalaureate degree program may transfer a maximum of 75 credits into the School of Continuing Education.  The dean or advisor with whom the student meets makes decisions about which courses will be accepted and applied to the student’s program.

Students applying for admission to an associates degree program can transfer a maximum of 36    credits into the School of Continuing Education.

Students applying for admission to a certificate program can transfer a maximum of 9 credits into the School of Continuing Education.

Courses with grades of C or above are transferable.  SCE accepts courses from accredited colleges and universities, accredited proprietary schools, AP, CLEP, and DANTES, and some non-collegiate training / education programs approved for credit by the American Council on Education.

GENERAL EDUCATION CORE

All bachelor degree programs in SCE require completion of the liberal arts core requirements, as follows.  Transfer credit can be applied to these areas as appropriate.

ENGLISH     12 credits
HISTORY       6 credits
SCIENCE       6 credits
PHILOSOPHY     12 credits
THEOLOGY        12 credits
FINE ARTS   3 credits
MATH           3 credits
WRITING COURSE     3 credits **

**All baccalaureate degree students are required to complete two writing courses.  In most cases, the two courses will fall under the English category; however, a student may choose a writing course from another discipline – e.g., Communications.

SPECIFIC PROGRAM / MAJOR

Transfer credits are applied to specific programs according to the program’s requirements.  Some are very structured regarding requirements (example, Accountancy), and some are more flexible (example, the general Liberal Studies degree program allows for a large number (54) of electives).  One half of all major courses must be completed at Providence College.

HOW MANY TRANSFER CREDITS WILL YOU RECEIVE?

To determine an approximation of your transfer credit total, please follow the steps below.  Note that this is only an estimate; a meeting with a dean or advisor will provide you with exact information.

STEPS

  1. Choose your degree / program of interest.
  2. Review the program’s requirements in the SCE Catalog (link here).
  3. Match the courses you have earned at other institutions with a grade of C or above to the SCE program’s requirements.
  4. Every program has room for some “free electives.”  Transfer courses that do not seem to fit elsewhere can be used in this area.
  5. Schedule a meeting with an academic advisor to review your transcripts and receive a final determination regarding your transfer credits.
  6. If you decide to apply to PC SCE, order official transcripts from each college / university that you have previously attended; have them sent to SCE as part of the formal application process.
