The School of Continuing Education was founded in 1918 as the Extension Division of Providence College. For eighty-five years this segment of Providence College has been providing an outstanding education for those men and women who might otherwise have been denied such an opportunity. The philosophy that has guided, and will continue to guide, the School of Continuing Education is set forth in Section 7 of the Act of Incorporation of Providence College.

Section 7 of the Act of Incorporation of Providence College states:

No person shall be refused admission to said college as a student, nor shall any person be denied any of the privileges, honors or degrees of said college on account of the religious opinions he may entertain.

Today we recognize such statements guaranteeing equal opportunity for all people in the pursuit of an education. However, this statement cited from the Act of Incorporation of Providence College was written in February 1917. In this historical context it stands as an enlightened document which embodies the spirit and commitment of Providence College in the field of higher education. This spirit and commitment to education is a product of over seven centuries of Dominican tradition.

School of Continuing Education Mission Statement

As an integral part of Providence College, the School of Continuing Education stresses its Catholic, Dominican, and liberal arts heritage by offering a comprehensive set of programs and services specially designed to meet the higher education needs of adult learners. The School is recognized for its quality teaching, active student body, and academic programs. We are committed to educating the whole person by providing values-based learning experiences which prepare women and men to lead lives of reflection while at the same time providing opportunities to develop a foundation for a career.

Our goal is to help the individual to achieve personal and professional growth; we strive to make a difference in the lives of our students. We value the diversity of our student body and the rich experiences they bring to our community of lifelong learners.

The School of Continuing Education has created a teaching-learning environment that is sensitive to the complex needs of adult learners. The schedule of classes, program designs, instructional formats, locations, and faculty and staff office hours have been established to be flexible and convenient. Through our advisors and counselors, academic support services are offered along with career development and academic counseling.
