Special and Archival Collections

The Office of Special and Archival Collections of Providence College is in the process of revising its web site.  However, our mission is to fulfill the information and research needs of the undergraduate students while supporting the curricula of the institution.  It also supports faculty research and serves as a resource for the local academic, religious, and civic communities.

Our collections consist of primary and secondary 20th century resources that have been acquired and preserved by the Library since the founding of the department in 1967.

Before beginning research, researchers are asked to sign in and fill out a short Research Form identifying themselves and the materials they are requesting.  This helps us to provide better service and to better identify those collections that are used the most.

Certain collections may have donor restrictions and may not be available, nor may archival or manuscript materials be removed from the Reading Room area or borrowed from the collections.

Please consult the Polices and Procedures page for the complete criteria on using the collections.

The Office of Special and Archival Collections is located on the lower level of the Library in Room 108.

News from the Special and Archival Collections Office

We are pleased to announce an additional digital collaborative venture between the Digital Services Lab and the Office of Special and Archival Collections of Phillips Memorial Library.

The pilot project for this collaborative venture is the Providence College 1944 Veritas. During World War II in a patriotic spirit to contribute to the war effort, the class of 1944 choose to hand produce their Veritas in scrapbook form. The resulting effort was a unique artifact that contributed to the war effort by not using valuable strategic materials, yet preserved the memories of the graduating class.

Past projects in collaboration between the two offices have included the digitization of the William E. Walsh Civil War Diary and portions of the  RI United States Colored Artillery (Heavy) 11th Regiment collection. These collections represent the on-going efforts by the Phillips Memorial Library to provide greater patron access to our Special Collections.

Special thanks are given to Chris Day and Julie Kliever of the Digital Services Lab for making these projects possible.

In additional news we would like everyone to wish Larissa Galvin who was our graduate assistant, the very best in her future endeavors. Larissa, who completed her Masters in History, left at the end of July. She had been an invaluable asset to the office and will be missed by everyone here.

However, we are also very pleased to welcome Erin Redihan who has replaced Larissa. Erin, a PC graduate from Cumberland, RI, is working towards her Masters in History. As an undergraduate, she worked as the sports editor for the Cowl and as an editor for the Veritas yearbook. Erin is a welcome addition to the office and we are excited to have her working with us.
