Librarian for Special Collections and Archives

Supervisor: Director of the Library

Hours:  8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (Monday-Friday)

OVERVIEW:  Manage all aspects of the College’s special and archival collections housed in the Phillips Memorial Library and on the web as integral components of the overall collections.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Create, maintain and provide access to Special Collections already in the library; take appropriate steps to acquire additional collections as opportunities arise, including entrepreneurial and grant-based opportunities; create finding aids in all media to provide optimal and appropriate access to Collections; and train staff to better acquire, maintain and provide access of all sorts to Collections in all media.  (20%)

2.   Create, maintain, and provide access to Archival Collections in the library; take appropriate steps to seek and acquire additional Archival Collections as opportunities arise, cooperating with appropriate College offices in regard to materials and files appropriate to the Archives; create finding aids in all media to provide optimal appropriate access to Archival Collections; and train staff to better acquire, maintain and provide multi-faceted access to Archival Collections in all media.   (20%)

3.   Select and prioritize collections and items to be placed into digital format in library collections, the Digital Commons, or other locations; remain current in appropriate resources (hardware, software, procedures, and processes) for effective digitization of special and archival collections, including local, HELIN, state, regional, national, and internal opportunities, organizations and training; ensure that staff are appropriately and effectively trained and that they develop toward competency to properly process the collections into digital format and make them optimally accessible; remain current in copyright, intellectual property, private, confidentiality and security laws/rules/regulations/guidelines and issues in order to ensure optimally accessible and safe use of special and archival collections; remain current in the use of digitization for conservation and preservation of these collections.  (15%)

4. Create and manage Web pages for the special and archival collections; ensure that staff are adequately trained to assist in the creation and management of Web pages; administer ongoing formative and periodical summative assessment of the pages’ usability, the content’s usefulness, and patron use; and contribute to HELIN and regional Web-based special and archival collections projects, e.g., RIAMCO.  (15%)

5.   Create multi-faceted, multi-media research materials for various levels of patrons, in electronic format on the library’s Web pages wherever possible; create and hold instructional sessions to teach other library staff (professional, support, and student) how to provide effective research education and assistance; and administer assessment of research education and assistance activities and monitor usage.  (15%)

6.   Provide staff with clear position descriptions, which guide and optimize staff work and productivity to meet area and library-wide goals and objectives; provide staff with explicit evaluative data provided orally and in writing; and make manifest the area’s productivity both quantitatively and qualitatively, in oral and written reports provided to the director and to colleagues in the library and beyond.  (15%)

MARGINAL DUTIES:
Perform all other duties as may be required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in LIS or equivalent education in a related field (e.g., history)
  • Demonstrated ability in special and archival collections based on education, vocational and/or avocational activities
  • Demonstrated ability to develop research materials which provide effective access to collections, especially in electronic/digital formats
  • Demonstrated technology savvy and relative expertise in appropriate technology hardware and software
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Study and/or work in a special and archival collections environment preferably in higher education
  • Demonstrated productive activity in digitization of materials
  • Demonstrated productive activity in the creation and/or maintenance of Web-based collections

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard
  • Communication skills using the spoken word
  • Ability to see within normal parameters
  • Ability to hear within normal range
  • Ability to move about
