Library Commons Librarian - Technology and Access Services Leader
Overview:
Providence College, a member of the HELIN Consortium, seeks an energetic, flexible and innovative leader to guide its Commons Technology and Access Services. The Library Commons Librarian reports to the library director. The Technology and Access Services unit is comprised of one professional, 7.5 FTE staff members and several student assistants, has primary responsibility for 1) library technology, 2) circulation, 3) interlibrary loan 4) reserves, and 5) stacks maintenance, as well as coordination of the 2nd-floor full-service desk.
Responsibilities:
Provide vision and expertise to the library in:
1) management of staff and activities in circulation of monographs, laptops, etc.; reserves in all media (including copyright compliance issues); stacks maintenance; and ILL, ensuring training as necessary;
2) Library Commons public technologies, serving as the first-response manager of public technologies in the Library Commons and coordinator of tiered technology services, especially public-service-desk-based support; serving as primary liaison with IT Dept.;
3) supervision of public technology support staff; providing access to training as necessary;
4) circulation database maintenance;
5) maintenance and management of the library's RFID assets and projects, including designing, documenting, acquiring, providing training for, and implementing appropriate RFID technologies and services;
6) ensuring appropriate Web presence for technology and access services;
7) anticipating future trends in technology and access services, maintain current awareness of pertinent national and international developments affecting these areas;
8) contributing to the library's quantitative and qualitative assessment of services through data-gathering and -analysis
9) serving on committees as appropriate within the College and the HELIN consortium;
10) creating statistical reports;
11) participating in problem-solving and policy-making activities; and 12) performing other duties as assigned Will involve some night and/or weekend supervision as needed. May participate in library liaison, reference and bibliographic instruction activities.
Qualifications:
Required-
-
ALA-accredited MLS and/or a combination of education and experience;
-
demonstrated technology savvy; professional experience working with pertinent computer hardware and software and peripherals, including wireless resources;

current awareness of emerging technologies; and willingness and ability to learn and teach new and appropriate technologies to staff;

ability to work independently and successfully in a collegial and dynamic environment, acquire new knowledge, skill and abilities quickly, think on one's feet with energy and flexibility;

ability to develop strategies for integrating new technologies and services into the existing framework;
-
knowledge of the issues and trends in librarianship, including copyright compliance issues;

inclusive and collegial management style;

excellent oral and written communication skills;

experience in an integrated “Commons” environment and in a liberal arts academic library;

experience with III / Innovative Interfaces ILS and its Millennium platform;

strong problem-solving abilities vis-à-vis computers(PC and Macintosh) and related technology (hardware and software);

scholarly or research interests vis-à-vis library and information services;

supervisory/management experience in an academic library;
-
experience writing proposals (grant, project, etc.);

working knowledge of languages(s) beyond English (modern languages and Latin);

experience working in a consortium;

collection management experience;

strong, enthusiastic commitment to integrated and innovative patron-focused service;

resilience of character and perspective, with a sense of humor
