Library Commons Assistant Academic Year (4)

LIBRARY COMMONS ASSISTANT - Part-Time  Academic Year (LIBRARY SCHOOL STUDENT)

HOURS: Sunday - Wednesday, 5 p.m. - 10 p.m.
*schedule negotiable, some daytime hours preferred

 
REPORTS TO:  Coordinator of Reference Services/Reference Librarian

OVERVIEW:  Provide a full range of library commons services, including reference/research services and productivity services (computer hardware, software, digitization services, etc.)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Assist students, faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as other patrons, in identifying and using the library's print and electronic resources, as well as technology resources, both in person and over the phone.  Assist patrons in using and evaluating online sources, especially the library's electronic databases and Internet resources. 
2. Provide reference service both in person and via IM (chat) and e-mail reference, at the information station, as well as at the support station on the 2nd floor and elsewhere in the library and on campus.
3. Instruct both on-site and remote patrons in the use of library computers and other technology, such as the scanning work stations that are part of the library commons, and perform basic troubleshooting.
4. Assist patrons in identifying and locating materials in the federal and state government documents collections.
5. Prepare for and teach library instruction classes.  Collaborate with the reference/instruction librarian, communicate with faculty about their instructional needs; prepare handouts and other instructional materials; teach classes; and evaluate effectiveness of instruction.
6. Perform online searches for patrons using DIALOG, Lexis-Nexis, STN, etc., and instruct patrons when appropriate.  Seek opportunities to use digital and electronic resources to provide the highest quality service to patrons.

MARGINAL DUTIES:  
1. Perform all other duties as may be required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Enrollment in an MLS degree program and completion of at least one reference course required, and/or a combination of education and experience.
