Reference Librarian (Part time)
Reports to Web Services Coordinator and Reference Librarian

The Phillips Memorial Library at Providence  College seeks a creative and energetic colleague who is committed to the highest level of reference service. This part-time position includes the following duties:

  • Assist college students, faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as members of the local community, in identifying and using the library's print and electronic resources, both in person and over the phone
  • Assist patrons in using and evaluating online sources, especially the library's electronic databases and Internet resources
  • Provide reference service via both virtual- and e-mail reference and at the information desk, as well as at the reference desk and elsewhere in the library and on campus
  • Instruct patrons in using library computers and perform basic troubleshooting; teach library instruction classes
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience Required

  • Master of Library Science degree or equivalent from an American Library Association-accredited institution required
  • Experience in the following areas preferred: academic library; HELIN and/or Innovative Interfaces, Inc., system; computer hardware and software.

Work Schedule:
Tuesday 4:00-11:00 pm
Friday 12:00 noon-8:00 pm every other week
Saturday 4:00pm-8:00 pm
Sunday 6:00pm-11:00 pm

Average total number of hours per week: 20

Reference Assistant (library school student)
Available Fall 2005
Reports to: Coordinator of reference services and reference librarian

OVERVIEW:
This position's primary role is to provide reference assistance to students, faculty, staff and other library users. An additional goal is to provide a library school student experience in working at a busy reference desk in an academic library. The position assists patrons in identifying and using the library's print and electronic resources. The incumbent teaches library instruction classes in consultation with the reference/instruction librarian and performs online searches together with the reference librarians.  The position functions under the direct supervision of the coordinator of reference services and reference librarian and works with the reference librarians.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 
1. Assists Providence College students, faculty, and staff, as well as other patrons, in identifying and using the library's print and electronic
resources, both in person and over the phone; assists patrons in evaluating online sources, especially Internet resources.
2. Instructs both on-site and remote patrons in using computers.
3. Assists patrons in identifying and locating materials in the federal and
state government documents collections.
4. Prepares for and teaches library instruction classes upon request;
evaluates the effectiveness of instruction.
5. Performs online searches for patrons using DIALOG, Lexis-Nexis, STN, etc.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Enrollment in a Master of Library Science degree program and
completion of at least one reference course required
Other: Must be physically able to accompany patrons to various locations in
the library.

SCHEDULE:
Sunday-Wednesday, 5:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. This is an academic year appointment
(32 weeks).
Schedule is negotiable, based upon the student's need to attend class.

PAY:
$12.00/hr.
