LOCATING BOOKS:

What is the HELIN library catalog? The HELIN catalog displays book listings and other types of materials for the Higher Education Library Information Network. The HELIN consortium consists of Providence College and the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University, Johnson and Wales University, Bryant College and the Community College of Rhode Island. The online catalog includes materials owned by eight of the nine academic libraries (Brown University’s collection is not reflected in the HELIN online catalog; please see below), as well as materials owned by the two affiliate libraries: the Dominican House of Studies and the Association of Rhode Island Health Sciences Libraries (ARIHSL).

What is the InRhode library catalog ? The InRhode catalog displays 4.7 million listings
for books and other types of materials for the nine academic libraries in the Higher Education Library Information Network.
Providence College users may borrow titles online from
Brown University if no other HELIN library has the title
.

What is a HELIN Request? Books not available at PC but listed in the HELIN catalog may be requested directly using the computer. Look for the slate blue button labeled HELIN Request at the top of the computer screen. When this button is selected, screens that follow will ask for the name and barcode of a HELIN library user. The barcode is located on the reverse of the Providence College Identification Card. The book requested will usually be delivered to PC within 48 hours.

Why should you perform a KEYWORD search? The HELIN catalog system will search for desired term(s) in the titles of books as well as in any supplementary material provided in the record. Searching KEYWORD results should produce some relevant results. Relevant records may be examined to find the official SUBJECT headings assigned to the record.

Why should you perform a SUBJECT search? A SUBJECT search ensures that material has been gathered that is truly related. Catalogers have assigned standardized subject terms to books and other records with similar content. The vocabulary is controlled and helps to focus the search.
