Cataloging/Digital Projects (CDP) Librarian

Overview of an Employment Opportunity at
Phillips Memorial Library, Providence College

Providence College seeks to fill a tenure-track faculty position.
The library, a member of the HELIN Consortium, seeks an energetic, flexible and innovative leader to guide its Cataloging and Digital Projects (CDP) services. The CDP librarian reports to the library director and is a member of the ordinary faculty. The CDP unit, comprised of one professional, two staff members and several student assistants, has primary responsibility for knowledge management which entails:
1) cataloging all materials acquired by the college in all formats
2) collaborative leadership in the library's digital projects, and collaborates closely with other areas of Collection Services and electronic resources.

Responsibilities: Provide vision and expertise to the library in:

  1. cataloging, authority control and database maintenance; perform original cataloging and advance copy cataloging in a variety of formats and all subject areas, using OCLC, the current edition of AACR2, Library of Congress Classification and Subject Headings;
  2. collaborating with the Director and Library and College staff and faculty in planning, implementing and managing the library's digital assets and digital projects;
  3. supervising the CDP staff; providing training as necessary;
  4. performing catalog database maintenance;
  5. maintaining and collaboratively managing the library's digital assets and projects, including designing, documenting, acquiring, providing training for and implementing appropriate technologies, collections and services
  6. ensuring appropriate Web presence for CDP;
  7. anticipating future trends in an evolving digital environment, maintain current awareness of national and international developments affecting metadata, cataloging, and information retrieval, and attend professional meetings and workshops to monitor changes in metadata standards and practices;
  8. contributing to the library's quantitative and qualitative assessment of services through data-gathering and -analysis
  9. serving on committees as appropriate within the College and Consortium;
  10. creating statistical reports;
  11. participating in problem-solving and policy-making activities; and
  12. performing other duties as assigned

    May participate in library liaison, reference and bibliographic instruction activities.
    Must demonstrate a record of scholarly achievements and service for tenure and promotion.

 

Qualifications:
Required-

  • ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent library degree or experience;
  • at least 2 years professional experience working with pertinent tools (e.g., MARC formats, AACR2, Library of Congress Classification and Subject Headings, SuDocs, OCLC)
  • working knowledge of at least one metadata schema other than LC (e.g., EAD/Encoded Archival Description, TEI/Text Encoding Initiative, METS, SML/MARC, Dublin Core)
  • project design and management experience;
  • demonstrated scholarly or research interests;
  • high technology savvy and evolving expertise in appropriate technologies
  • ability to work independently and successfully in a collegial and dynamic environment, learn new technologies quickly, think on one's feet with energy, flexibility;
  • ability to develop strategies for integrating new technologies and services into the existing framework
  • knowledge of the issues and trends in librarianship, including digital resource and copyright compliance issues;
  • inclusive and collegial management style;
  • excellent communication skills;
  • ability to meet tenure requirements.

Preferred-

  • experience in an integrated "Commons" environment and in a liberal arts academic library;
  • experience with III / Innovative Interfaces ILS and its Millennium platform;
  • strong computer and related technology skills (hardware and software), including knowledge of metadata/taxonomy schemes;
  • experience with government documents (US and others);
  • experience writing proposals (grant, project, etc.);
    * experience with open URL-resolvers, metasearch software, electronic resource management software, bibliographic utilities (e.g., EndNote, ProCite, etc.) and related tools;
  • experience associated with the creation and maintenance of data related to digital materials;
  • experience with institutional repositories, especially Digital Commons (ProQuest);
  • working knowledge of language(s) beyond English (modern languages and Latin);
  • experience working in a consortium;
  • collection management experience;
  • strong, enthusiastic commitment to integrated and innovative patron-focused service; and
  • resilience of character and perspective, with a sense of humor.
