Teaching Philosophy
Every semester, I tell my classes that the College pays me to make their lives uncomfortable so that they might develop, or in some cases discover, talents and skills within themselves. To accomplish this goal, each of my courses affords students with opportunities to apply concepts and theories discussed in the classroom to real world scenarios. In short, I strive to create an interactive, lively, and contemporary environment for learning. Drawing upon a strong theoretical base, my courses are designed to appeal to students with different learning styles.
My goal as an instructor at Providence College is to excite and engage our students. in short, my aspirations for our students are high, and they are matched by high expectations for their performance in the classroom.
Research & Interests
Dr. Hackey's principal research and teaching interests lie in the area of comparative state health care policy (i.e., state efforts to control health care costs through certificate of need programs, health planning, and rate regulation), cellular phone regulation, and health care reform. He is currently working on a book manuscript on the health care crisis in America from the 1970s to the present day. As a political scientist, Dr. Hackey notes that "this book unpacks the various meanings of the health care crisis by analyzing the rhetoric used by decision makers and issue entrepreneurs at the federal, state and local level. My goal is to construct an interpretive explanation of the emergence and persistence of the health care crisis in America."
