Dr. Richard M. Battistoni, professor of political science and of public and community service studies and chair of the Department of Political Science, was a speaker and panel moderator at a University of Minnesota symposium entitled "Unpacking the Complexities of Civic Engagement" held in January.

Adrian G. Beaulieu, dean of international studies, delivered a presentation entitled "Campus Financial Meltdown: The Coming Tsunami in Study Abroad?" at the Global Associates International Symposium--a special pre-conference program for the annual conference of the University Continuing Education Association--in Boston on April 1.

Dr. Carol B. Crafts, associate dean of undergraduate studies and advisor for the health professions, was named president-elect of the Northeast Association of Advisors for the Health Professions at the association's annual meeting in Philadelphia, Pa., in April.

Dr. Anthony M. Esolen, professor of English, delivered a presentation entitled "Catholicism: The Last Hope for a Dying Culture" at the St. Paul Seminary in Pittsburgh on March 4.

Dr. Deborah Peters Goessling, associate professor of education, presented a paper at the annual American Educational Research Association (AERA) conference in San Diego, Calif., on April 14. The title of the paper was "Teachers with a Visible Disability Reflect on Their Student Teaching Experience," which was part of a broader session on pre-service teachers sponsored by the Division of Teacher Education. Goessling was also a discussant at AERA for the session, "Studies of Autism Spectrum Disorder," sponsored by the Special Education Research Group on April 14.

Dr. Wanda S. Ingram, senior associate dean of undergraduate studies, and Jacqueline Kiernan MacKay, associate dean and director of Parent Programs, were the keynote speakers at the fifth annual "Is College in Your Future? A College Planning Forum" in March. The topic of their speech was "The Freshman Experience: What to expect as you transition from high school to college."

Ann Galligan Kelley, associate professor of accountancy and director of the business studies program, and Margaret P. Ruggieri, assistant professor of accountancy, co-authored a paper entitled "Absenteeism Problems and Costs: Causes, Effects, and Cures" along with Dr. Mehmet Kocakulah, Professor of Accounting in the College of Business at the University of Southern Indiana, for the June 2009 edition of the International Business and Economics Research Journal.

Dr. MaryJane Lenon, associate professor of economics, chair of the Department of Management, and MBA Program director, had an article entitled "Foreclosures and Falling Home Prices" published in the Winter 2009 edition of The Connecticut Economy. The article was co-authored by Dr. Dennis R. Heffley, professor of economics and chair of the department at the University of Connecticut.

Francis T. O'Brien, associate professor of economics and director of the Quirk Institute of Industrial Relations, spoke at the Labor Guild of the Archdiocese of Boston on May 4. His remarks focused on the state of the economy and an examination of the major economic issues confronting the economy in 2009.

On May 12, 2009, O'Brien spoke on "The Arbitration Process" in conjunction with a workshop presented by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service as part of a steward training program conducted for the Office and Professional Employees International Union.

Janice G. Schuster, coordinator of reference services and reference librarian and associate professor in Phillips Memorial Library, had an article entitled "International Trade Data Network" published in the April 2009 edition of the Charleston Advisor, which focuses on critically reviewing online databases and resources.

Dr. Michael D. Spiegler, professor of psychology, was a featured speaker at the 31st annual National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology meeting at St. Pete Beach, Fla., in January. Spiegler's talk was entitled "Should You Write a Psychology Textbook? Almost Everything You Need to Know." In addition to Spiegler, Dr. Christopher M. Bloom, assistant professor of psychology; Dr. Mary E. Harmon-Vukic, assistant professor of psychology; Dr. Mary O'Keefe, associate professor of psychology; and Dr. Jennifer L. Van Reet, assistant professor of psychology, presented at the meeting.

Dr. Giacomo Striuli, professor of Italian, delivered a paper entitled "The Archetypal Child and Cinematic History in Fellini and Benigni" at the NeMLA (Modern Language Association) 2009 Convention, held from February 26 through March 1 in Boston. The paper examined the complexities of the visualization of history through the lens of a child.

Dr. James J. Tattersall, professor of mathematics and special lecturer in education and in natural science, delivered two talks at international conferences this spring. On April 15, he presented "Nictaginaceous Shrubs and Mathematics: Louis Antoine Bougainville" at An Interdisciplinary Conference on 1759 at the Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies at Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. On June 6, he presented "A Late Nineteenth Century Mathematical Subculture" at a joint meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society and the Canadian Society for History and Philosophy of Mathematics at Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland.
