Position
Academic Background
Sample Courses Taught at PC
My library instruction courses have included: English; Social Work; History; Political Science; Psychology; and various School of Continuing Education courses.
Teaching Philosophy
Teaching occurs in many situations in the library. When I assist students at the reference desk, on the phone, via e-mail or chat, for example, I teach them at least some of the skills they need in order to become independent researchers as well as skills to distinguish appropriate, authoritative sources from inappropriate ones. I also teach students in formal library instruction classes. My philosophy in all of my library teaching situations is to enable students to realize the vast store of resources that is available to them through the library and beyond, and to teach them the skills they need to identify and use those resources.
Research & Interests
I serve as chair of our Higher Education Library Information Network (HELIN) consortium's collection development committee and on the HELIN committee council. HELIN is a model library consortium consisting of ten academic and fifteen health sciences libraries in Rhode Island. I'm also a member of the steering committee of the Association of College and Research Libraries/New England Chapter's Information Technology Interest Group; I will be the chair of that group next year. I feel it's vital to be engaged and active in the profession beyond my responsibilities at the library.
