Teaching Philosophy

I believe that the best introduction to the Western religious heritage is to read the primary texts which have shaped our religious consciousness.  My teaching and research have focused on providing undergraduates with the tools to read “the great texts” of the Western religious tradition.  Rather than impose presuppositions on the material, I attempt to give the relevant historical, philosophical and theological background so that the students can respond to the texts in a sympathetic and enlightened way.

Research & Interests

My research has had two directions.  The first is related to my teaching in interdisciplinary programs at Providence College, especially in the Development of Western Civilization Program. My books and articles have been related to this.  The second is in the area of pastoral commentary on the Roman Lectionary used for liturgy in the Catholic Church.  I hope that my weekly columns for The Providence Visitor have made a contribution to the spiritual life of the Catholic Church in Rhode Island.
