Teaching Philosophy

I have been a teacher for all of my professional life and am passionate about education and learning.  I believe that my teaching reflects that passion, and I try to instill in my students an interest in, and love for learning that will continue with them long after they leave the college classroom.  I strive to develop a learning community in each class where a sense of trust allows all students to grow and share individual knowledge and skills.

Research & Interests

My research interests center around teacher preparation and service-learning, a methodology that involves students in active leaning in community settings. As a member of the faculty research team that designed the Public and Community Service major at Providence College, service-leaning has become central to my concept of good teaching. Ten years ago I became involved in a national movement to examine the characteristics and effects of including this teaching method in teacher education classrooms. In addition, I have worked with teachers to include service-learning in K-12 classrooms, providing a method for involving all students in meaningful learning opportunities.
