Teaching Philosophy

While academic growth and achievement is the foundation of a college education, I feel it is equally important to help students develop and nurture a strong sense of values and ethics.  The importance of the Christian values of personal integrity, respect and appreciation for your fellow man are more critical than ever in today's world.  Whether in the home, in the classroom or in the boardroom, knowledge alone is not enough when facing tough decisions...Cultivating a strong sense of morality is an important component of preparing students to be responsible and productive citizens, which is an integral part of the Providence College mission...

...In harmony with the Dominican tradition, I believe in teaching the whole person with respect as the foundation.  I have respect for the abilities, opinions and potential of my students; I respect and acknowledge the complexities of the concepts and theories discussed; I respect the demands and expectations I place on my students and I promote mutual respect and nurture moral decision making in the classroom.  I have found that an environment of respect in the classroom encourages students to be engaged in discussions and assume responsibility for their performance...

...I strive for academic excellence by challenging students with a rigorous course of study.  I believe it is my responsibility to help students discover their true potential.  My classroom mantra is "no pain, no gain".  As I set the standard high for myself, I also set a high standard for my students.  The students have proven they are capable of the challenge...

...An exciting and important aspect of teaching accounting is connecting the classroom theories to the "real world".  With so many examples of questionable business practices in today's world, it is more important than ever that students be aware of how relevant the classroom is in gaining the necessary foundation for critical thinking and moral judgment.
