Teaching Philosophy

In the words of Louis Schmier, "If you want to be a teacher, you have to put aside your formal theories and intellectual constructs and axioms and statistics and charts when you reach out to touch that miracle called the individual human being." In reflecting on Schmier's words and my years as a faculty member at Providence College, my teaching philosophy has clearly evolved from an initial emphasis on "love of discipline" to an enhanced focus on "love of student."  Hence, I try to be student-focused in my classes, encouraging students to be active participants in the learning process. Only through such student-faculty interaction do I feel we can hope to learn from one another.

Over the years, I have also come to more fully appreciate that teaching at Providence College provides an opportunity to embrace the uniqueness of our Catholic and Dominican traditions. This is not to suggest evangelization, but rather, that as we explore the range of our discipline we acknowledge the influence of Judeo-Christian values as articulated in the Dominican tradition.

Finally, I often encourage my students to have the insight and courage to detect and pursue their calling or vocation in life. I consider myself blessed to have found my vocation in teaching.
