Teaching Philosophy
I have a great passion for teaching. One of my favorite comments received from students is "you show a great enthusiasm for the subject." Many people assume accounting is boring. My students find that by learning accounting, they have a better understanding of the business world. By putting time and effort into my lectures, I try and ensure my students get the most out of each class. Former students tell me what they like most about my teaching style is that I use a very no frills, tell it like it is approach to which they can relate. They tell me I am fair, and they can tell I genuinely care about them. Students have commented on evaluations that while my classes are not easy, by my using a simple and easily accessible teaching style, they have a less difficult time when it comes to the more advanced topics. I hope my students realize that they need to work hard, but I am there to help them survive the work along the way. I will push them and challenge them, with the hopes that the end result will help them in their future endeavors.
I particularly love teaching in the areas of taxation and financial accounting. Since these areas are constantly changing, they require staying current, and becoming knowledgeable about new laws and potential changes to the laws. In particular, taxation is the kind of class where it is difficult to become "stale" in content. I am always able to share with my classes current articles within the Wall Street Journal and the national press. I hope that these articles encourage students to read daily news and pay attention to some of the world around them. During my courses I emphasize the importance of continuous learning and critical thinking. I tell my students that while it's wonderful to memorize the current laws, there are many laws and these laws change. They must know and understand the basics, and then understand where to find the appropriate rules and be able to apply them to a specific situation.
I enjoy working with students and knowing I have made a difference in their lives. I look forward to continuing instruction and improving the work I do in the front of a classroom.
