Classrooms across campus will have a different feel next academic year following the end to 15 illustrious teaching careers.
On Tuesday, April 15, the faculty members--who represent 577 years of service to the College--were honored at a Faculty Retirement Celebration in Slavin Center '64 Hall. The outgoing faculty members will be retiring at the end of the 2007-08 academic year.
As the room buzzed with family, friends, faculty, and staff members, Dr. Hugh F. Lena, vice president for academic affairs, shared his gratitude for the soon-to-be retirees' exemplary service.
"It's a little bit overwhelming to describe the accomplishments of all these people, but they certainly are impressive," he said.
Following Lena's remarks, College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. said the ceremony represented a "wonderful day, but also a sad day." He continued, "It's a day to rejoice in your accomplishments, but it's also a little sad because you won't be around campus anymore."
Father Shanley added that although "we often don't know what kind of effect we have on students' lives, all of you have thrown seeds to students that have borne fruit."
Although all of the retiring faculty members have at least 24 years of service to the College, two boast 50 or more years of service each. Robert L. Deasy, associate professor of history, and Dr. Robert I. Krasner, professor of biology, are retiring after teaching at the College for 52 and 50 years, respectively.
At the end of the speaking portion of the celebration, which was planned and hosted by the Department of Human Resources, each of the outgoing faculty members was given a digital camera and informed that Providence College "captain's chairs" were being delivered to their homes.
The celebration concluded with pictures and a reception, including a congratulatory cake.
