The Publications Center is committed to producing quality publications that reflect the College’s mission and goals; that are informative, accurate, and timely; and that reflect engaging writing while strictly adhering to the school’s editorial and graphic standards.
The articles we publish are written by professional staff members and freelancers and by trained and experienced student editorial assistants, who follow the guidelines of the College’s Editorial Standards Manual. Any article sent to a source for fact-checking already has been edited in accordance with these editorial standards.
As a courtesy, the Publications Center shows a copy of a story to relevant sources* before it is published. Sources generally are members of the College community and beyond who have provided information or comments for the story or who are considered experts on the subject matter being presented.
The Publications Center requests fact checks for a story to allow sources to check for accuracy. Sources are asked not to rewrite, heavily edit, or otherwise change the focus of the article. This could delay or prevent publication.
The Publications Center asks sources not to change quotes within a story. If a source believes a quote is inaccurate, the Publications Center will make the necessary changes to ensure accuracy. The language of a quote should not be changed for the sake of making a change.
Sources who are sent copy for fact checking are asked to respond by the deadline given. If the Publications Center does not hear back from a source by that time, we will assume there are no changes and will proceed with the story as written.
* The Publications Center reserves the right to determine who is a “relevant source” for fact checking.
