Scholarship established in memory of educator

A scholarship fund has been established at the College in memory of Dr. Edward C. Morawa '67, a respected, longtime educator in the New Britain, Conn., school system.

According to the Office of Institutional Advancement, the Edward C. Morawa Memorial Scholarship Fund is being supported in two ways, as directed by Dr. Morawa prior to his death. It is funded through proceeds from his life insurance policy as well as through his retirement account—which amount to a total of approximately $400,000. Recipients of the scholarship, which was formally established in March 2005, will be students with financial need.

Dr. Morawa was a reading teacher at the DiLoretto Magnet School in New Britain and taught in that city's school system for 34 years. He was born in New Britain and lived most of his life there, attending St. Thomas Aquinas High School. He died suddenly in June 2004 at age 58.

He was so admired and respected by the staff and students at DiLoretto Magnet School that, following his death, the school dedicated its annual Reading Day to him and hung a portrait of him in the school's media center.

Dr. Morawa earned a bachelor's degree in history/secondary education while at PC. He also held a doctorate from the University of Connecticut. He was a regular supporter of PC's Annual Fund and scholarships for education majors.

"This endowed scholarship is such a valuable addition to the College's portfolio of donor endowed funds," said Lisette Clem, director of operations and research in the Office of Institutional Advancement. "Dr. Morawa's generosity and commitment to his alma mater are exemplary. The students who will benefit from this scholarship will carry his legacy into the next generation."
