Accountancy Students Gaining ‘Introduction to the Profession’

Providence, R.I.--For the fifth consecutive year, the Providence College Department of Accountancy is sponsoring Introduction to the Profession, a one-credit course featuring guest speakers--including 14 alumni--from a variety of accounting-related fields.

The schedule consists of six sessions on Thursdays from 4:00-6:30 p.m. and usually includes multiple speakers.

Speakers in the first two sessions, both of which took place in September, focused on national and regional firms in public accounting. The third, scheduled for October 22, focuses on government and public service.

On October 29, the fourth session will have two speakers discussing their respective administrative careers in hospitals and law, and the fifth, on November 5, will have three speakers from the fields of public service and law enforcement. The final session on November 19 will focus on banking and insurance.

"I pick the speakers based upon their range of experiences in a variety of careers, post-accountancy study," said Carol A. Hartley, C.P.A., assistant professor of accountancy. "I prefer to select speakers who have been out of college long enough to have developed a fuller life experience they can reflect on and share with the students--good and bad. All experiences provide lessons our students can learn from and use."

This semester, students already have heard from the following:

  • Susan Esper '91, partner in the Boston office of Deloitte Development LLC
