Providence, R.I.--Following a strong performance at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, California, on April 18, the Providence College men's and women's track teams had eight athletes qualify for the NCAA Regional Championship.
This marks the most athletes Providence has ever had qualify for the regional championships, which will be held at North Carolina A&T State University on May 29-30, 2009.
The men's team had five runners qualify for the regional championship meet. Charles Dewey '09 (Worcester, Mass.) placed fourth-overall in the 800 meters with a time of 1:49.74, a personal-best. Hayden McLaren '10 (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Dominic Channon '12 (Nelson, New Zealand) qualified in the 1,500 meters, running 3:44.02 and 3:46.16, respectively. In the 5,000 meters, David McCarthy '11 (Waterford, Ireland) and Richard Yeates '09 (Dublin, Ireland) qualified, after running personal-best times of 13:42.11 and 14:03.22, respectively.
On the women's side, all three qualifiers came in the 5,000 meters. Danette Doetzel '09 (Macklin, Sask., Canada) placed eighth with a personal-best time of 15:46.76. Krystal Douglas '10 (Harpswell, Maine) and Hannah Davidson '12 (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) also qualified in the 5,000 running respective times of 16:31.26 and 16:41.61.
