Providence, R.I.--The Office of Alumni Relations, the Parents for Providence Association, and regional alumni clubs will collaborate with three other Providence College offices to sponsor an expanded series of Freshman and New Student Receptions this summer.
The changes are spurred by revisions in the New Student Orientation program. Beginning this summer with the Class of 2013, orientation for incoming class members and new transfer students will be held the week before fall classes begin, replacing the previous model of several two-day sessions held throughout the summer.
Traditionally hosted by alumni clubs and Parents for Providence, the summer receptions also will now be supported formally by the offices of Admission, Student Affairs Administration, and Residence Life.
Sixteen receptions in eight states and the District of Columbia are planned--an increase from last year's total of 11.
In addition to major metropolitan areas, the receptions will incorporate alumni clubs and new students in regional "pockets" of the country, according to Robert Ferreira '83, assistant vice president for alumni relations. Many of them will take place in large settings, such as country clubs, to accommodate an anticipated increase in participants and student guests.
While alumni relations staff have attended past receptions, each event this summer will include representatives from Admission, Academic Affairs, and Student Affairs Administration, as well as New Student Orientation staff members. For the first time, each reception will feature remarks on student life at the College from a student speaker.
