Providence, R.I.--Although he lives in California, Providence College alumnus Todd Slater '97 is bringing a touch of Hollywood to upstate New York.
Along with his brothers, Wade and Grant, Slater will host a Hollywood-style film festival from August 7-9 in Hamilton, N.Y. The brothers grew up in Hamilton, and their late father, Terry, was the head men's ice hockey coach at Colgate University, from 1977 to 1991. During that time, Mr. Slater took the team to the NCAA Division I Championship game.
The weekend of events will include screening several films; panel discussions with leaders in the sports, arts, and entertainment industries; a fundraising walk to benefit the Hamilton Food Cupboard; and a special screening at Hamilton Central School to benefit the high school's athletic department. All the proceeds of the night will be donated to the school.
The brothers have combined for more than 50 years of experience in the sports, arts, and entertainment industries. Recently, they formed Slater Brothers Entertainment (SBE) so they could establish an entertainment company that produces major sporting, art, and film events that have a charitable focus. The film festival is an example of one such endeavor.
"Our father was a very successful hockey coach at Colgate, our mother was the director of public health for Oneida County, and we all attended Hamilton Central School. Many friends and family members still reside in upstate New York," Slater said. "For these reasons and more, we looked at each other and said 'Let's do this."
Prior to forming SBE, Todd Slater, who graduated from PC with a bachelor's degree in political science, worked as executive vice president for Baldwin Entertainment Group in Santa Monica, Calif. He also was senior vice president for Anschutz Film Group and is currently an advisor to Deon Taylor Enterprises and Huntsman Entertainment.
Slater has been associated with such films as the Academy Award-winning Ray, based on the life of legendary musician Ray Charles; Sahara, starring Matthew McConaughey; and the yet-to-be released picture, Chain Letter, starring Nikki Reed of Twilight fame. He is currently producing several films in Hollywood.
