Randall Professor to Lecture on “The Stigmata of St. Francis”

Providence, R.I.--Dr. Robert Kiely will present his second lecture as the 2008-09 Rev. Robert J. Randall Distinguished Professor of Christian Culture at Providence College on Tuesday, November 18, at 3:30 p.m. in Moore Hall III on campus.

Open to the College community and the public, the lecture is entitled "The Stigmata of St. Francis: Where was Brother Leo?"

The lecture will spotlight faith and doubt, and examine the role of the witness (Brother Leo) as a verifying agent. Kiely will consider the legends and paintings that treat the miracle of St. Francis receiving the wounds of Christ while praying on Mount La Verna.

Kiely is the Loker Research Professor of English at Harvard University, where he has taught since 1963. He is the fifth scholar to be appointed to the Randall Professorship, which is PC's first endowed chair. The chair is named for the scholar, priest, artist, and longtime PC Department of English faculty member, who retired in 2004.
