PC Philosophy Professor Appointed Fellowship Coordinator

Providence, R.I.--Dr. Michael J. O'Neill, Providence College assistant professor of philosophy, has been named the College's first fellowship coordinator.

O'Neill, who has taught at the College for seven years, will be responsible for identifying students--and aiding faculty members in mentoring those students--who are eligible to apply for various competitive and prestigious postgraduate fellowship awards.

The awards include Jack Kent Cooke, Fulbright, Gates Cambridge, Goldwater, Marshall, Carnegie Mellon, and Truman scholarships.

Dr. Hugh F. Lena, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said prior to the position being created, the College relied on a number of faculty members who acted as liaisons with specific fellowships to guide students. By creating the new position, the College will be doing "a better job of cultivating and mentoring high-profile students."

The faculty members with comprehensive knowledge of the specific awards will now comprise the Fellowship Advisory Committee and will provide advice and support to O'Neill.

With the assistance of the committee, O'Neill will develop a systematic approach for improving the identification, recruitment, and mentoring of qualified students; educate the academic community about fellowship programs; develop additional opportunities for scholarships and awards; and establish membership with the National Association of Fellowship Advisors.

"I am pleased that Dr. O'Neill has agreed to take on this important role of cultivating our talented students' eligibility for prestigious postgraduate honors," said Lena. "His rapport with students and earnest desire to assist in their career advancement were critical factors in his appointment."

O'Neill, who teaches Contemporary Philosophy, Social and Political Philosophy, and Philosophy of Art, among other courses, said he was eager to help students find the "resources and recognition that will enable them to achieve their goals."

"I'm looking forward to working with our faculty liaisons to the major awards to help our students receive the national recognition and financial support that I know they deserve," O'Neill said.
