Providence, R.I.--Thirty-one new, full-time faculty members have been hired at Providence College to lead classrooms across campus during the 2009-10 academic year.
Of the new hires, 22 are tenure-track, including nine who come from full-time teaching positions at other institutions and four who were post-doctoral fellows.
Each tenure-track faculty member hired is terminally qualified, with 10 completing their doctoral degrees in the last five months from institutions that include Harvard University, Yale University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brown University, Columbia University, and Duke University.
They have taught at institutions that include Yale, Boston College, the University of Alabama, Arizona State University, and Davidson College.
In all, 18 academic departments have new faculty members. The Department of English and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science each have three new faculty. The departments of accountancy, art and art history, biology, finance, history, management, marketing, sociology, and theology each have two.
New faculty orientation helping in transition
The new, full-time faculty and a number of new, part-time faculty members were welcomed to the College during an extensive New Faculty Orientation on August 26. The program was sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs.
Alyssa Neubecker, coordinator of faculty and administrative support services, said the program allows new faculty members to become more familiar with the College, develop contacts, and learn about available resources across campus.
"There is a commitment to hosting an interactive orientation," Neubecker said. "Various supplemental and optional workshops are held in the week after orientation. With this format, the program is flexible and allows new faculty to pick and choose from a menu of workshops based on their interests and needs."
Among the many workshops offered were "Crash Course: Rhode Island," "What's in my Classroom?," "Teaching with Technology," and sessions on benefits and legal issues.
Program to continue throughout the year
In recent years, New Faculty Orientation has been expanded throughout the year with additional academic and social programming. Neubecker said by staggering the program throughout the year, new faculty members are able to bond as a group and build relationships across academic disciplines.
She added that the yearlong approach also provides information gradually, thus making it easier for new faculty members to become acclimated without being overwhelmed.
Examples of events scheduled later in the academic year include "Presenting…Our New Faculty," "Conversation with the President: Faith and Reason in the Classroom," and a fall luncheon.
