Providence College Appoints New Dean of Judicial Affairs

Providence, RI --The Office of Student Affairs Administration has announced the appointment of Kevin M. Butler as the College's new dean of judicial affairs.

The appointment of a dean of judicial affairs was a recommendation of the Committee on Campus Culture, Conduct, and Civility in its recently released report, Addressing the Abuse of Alcohol on Campus: Final Report, Recommendations, and Tentative Timeline for Implementation.

Butler joins the College community after serving for the past 2½ years as associate dean of student services at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. His primary responsibility will be to render disciplinary decisions based on investigative work, assuring that the standards of the College are upheld while protecting the rights of students.

As associate dean at Wesleyan, Butler was the advisor to the Student Judicial Board, director of New Student Orientation, and the coordinator of Disability Services. He
has extensive experience in higher-education judicial affairs elsewhere as well.

Prior to serving at Wesleyan, he was the primary judicial officer for first-year students and a residence hall director at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn. He served for two years as the primary judicial officer and as area coordinator for Residence Life at Bryant College (now Bryant University) in Smithfield, R.I. Butler also was a student conduct hearing officer and residence hall director at Johnson & Wales University in Providence for a year.

A graduate of Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vt., Butler holds a master of fine arts degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
