First-Ever International Education Week Scheduled at PC

Providence, R.I.--The Providence College Center for International Studies (CIS) will sponsor the College's inaugural International Education Week from September 28 to 30.

Adrian G. Beaulieu, dean of international studies, said the week's main objective is "to encourage a greater understanding among the College community of the global and international dimensions that are present in most things being taught or discussed" at the College.

He said the CIS also wants to encourage more students to consider studying abroad, help students find post-graduate opportunities abroad, assist faculty in further internationalizing their curriculum, and raise the profile of international students at the College.

The week's events are listed below:

  • On September 28, Claire Pevoto '10 of Austin, Texas, and Elizabeth Weber '10 of East Longmeadow, Mass., will give a presentation on their summertime experiences abroad as the first recipients of the Father Philip A. Smith, O.P. Student Fellowships for Study and Service Abroad. The presentation will take place at noon in the Center for Catholic and Dominican Studies (CCDS) on campus. The event is hosted by the Office of Mission and Ministry and co-sponsored by the CIS.

Pevoto and Weber also will give a presentation on Tuesday, September 29, at 7:00 p.m. in the CCDS for students interested in applying for summer 2010 Smith fellowships.

Pevoto, a humanities major, volunteered in the Philippines at Bahay ni San Jose--House of St. Joseph. The house is an orphanage for poor and disabled children run by the Dominican Sisters of St. Joseph. Weber, a philosophy major, undertook tutorials in philosophy and theology with Dominicans at Blackfriars Hall in Oxford.

At 3:00 p.m., in Albertus Magnus Hall (Room 137), the Danish Institute for Study Abroad will host an information session for students in the premedical sciences and health professions track. The session will outline study programs in Copenhagen that center on biotechnology and biomedicine, medical practice and policy, HIV/AIDS in Europe, and public health.

At 4:00 p.m., in Slavin G01 (Soft Lounge), the PC International Student Organization will host "Crossing Borders: The International Student Experience." The session will feature stories, cultural lessons, and activities aimed at enhancing a better understanding of cultural differences and identities.

  • On September 29, Dr. Nicholas V. Longo, assistant professor of public and community service studies and director of the Global Studies Program, will host a "brown bag" luncheon for faculty to learn about how to incorporate an international component and short study abroad trip into their curriculum. Longo received a grant from CIS to participate in a faculty development seminar in Nicaragua in June 2009.  Based on that experience, Longo will offer a course on Nicaragua in Spring 2010, which will include a student excursion to Nicaragua during the Spring Break recess. The event will be held in Slavin G01 (Soft Lounge) at noon, and is intended for faculty interested in developing courses with an embedded international experience.

At 6:00 p.m., the second annual PC Student Study Abroad Fair will be held in Slavin Center '64 Hall. Program representatives from the numerous study abroad programs offered through PC--many of which include service-learning opportunities--will be on hand.

  • On September 30, at noon, the CCDS and CIS will co-sponsor "Learning from the Holocaust: Teaching Values in Study Abroad." Dr. John Heyl, vice president for global education with Cultural Experiences Abroad, will lead the lecture in the CCDS.

Also at noon, John Nonnamaker, executive director for career services, and Dr. Michael J. O'Neill, assistant professor of philosophy and newly appointed PC Fellowship Coordinator, will lead a discussion on international opportunities for employment, teaching, and internship opportunities abroad for post-graduates in the Slavin Center (Room 110).
