Providence College Hosts Idealist Career Day

Providence, RI-Providence College recently sponsored its first Idealist Career Day which focused on career opportunities in the not-for-profit sector.  The College's Office of Career Services and the Feinstein Institute for Public Service organized the event.

"Given our mission as a College, and the interest of our students in service, many undergraduates are curious about careers where they can make a difference in the lives of others," according to Kathy Clarkin, director of Career Planning and Internship Service at PC. The Idealist Career Day is designed to raise awareness of career paths in the not-for-profit sector including strategies for exploration of career options, internships, jobs, and/or graduate study.

Nearly 150 students participated in the day-long sessions which featured presentations by representatives from Idealist.org/Action Without Borders, a web-based organization which provides access to social networking and interpersonal connections for the global community.

One of the day's high points was the Practicum and Senior Seminar held in the Feinstein Academic Center and led by two Idealist/org representatives. The speakers from Idealist.org focused on dispelling myths and emphasized the unique opportunity for learning, interning, and networking afforded to PC students through the public service learning major.

"It seems as though the sector is growing and becoming a more realistic career path, something I will consider further following my participation in the Peace Corps," commented eonomics major, Alyson Hatchett `07.
