PC Human Resources Earns Prominent Wellness Honor

Providence, R.I.--Providence College has been named one of America's healthiest workplaces by the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA).

In being awarded a "Gold Well Workplace" designation, PC has joined a group of 700 organizations that have been recognized as "Well Workplaces" across the country.

WELCOA is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to promoting workplace wellness initiatives. In 1991, it developed the "Well Workplace" awards in four categories--bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. So far this year, PC is one of seven organizations to earn the award and one of four gold winners.

The honor is in recognition of the continuing commitment to the health and well-being of the College community through the "Fitness in Motion--Mind, Body, Spirit" program, said Elizabeth J. Walsh, director of benefits/associate director for human resources.

"Fitness in Motion" was implemented by the Department of Human Resources two years ago. The campus-wide initiative is designed to educate faculty and staff about making healthy choices and lifestyle changes, to assist with disease management and prevention, and to educate on the importance of being informed health care consumers.

WELCOA rated the PC program on four main components: gaining administration support, creating a supportive environment, putting together an operating plan, and evaluating the completed programs.

A list of programming undertaken over the past two years includes farmer's markets and annual health fairs; an eight-week stress management program; chair massages, flu shot clinics, and tobacco cessation and weight-management programs; and financial planning and employee assistance programs.

"We're extremely proud to be recognized by WELCOA. This prestigious award would not have been possible if it weren't for the strong participation of our faculty and staff," said Walsh. "We thank the entire PC community for their continued support and participation in the Fitness in Motion--Mind, Body, Spirit wellness program."
