Providence, RI--Providence College's Touring Choir sang four concerts before enthusiastic audiences in England, France, The Netherlands, and Belgium during its second European tour from May 20 through June 2, 2004.
The choir is comprised of 46 student vocalists from the Providence College's Women's Chorus, I Cantori, and the Concert Chorale. Conducting the choir was Dr. Michele M. Holt, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities at Providence College. Also traveling with the singers were: Sister Gail P. Himrod, O.P., associate professor of music and department chair; David R. Harper, special lecturer and coordinator of vocal studies; accompanist Joan Cook from the Mystic (Conn.) River Chorale; her husband, Roger Cook; and saxophonist Jennifer Bill, a member of the Providence College class of 2000.
This was the second time in four years the College's Touring Choir has traveled to Europe. In 2000, approximately 65 choir members and chaperones toured in Austria, Hungary, the Republic of Czechoslovakia, and Germany. Last year, the College's Liturgical Choir sang in Italy for several audiences, including a performance before Pope John Paul II. This year's tour included a highly anticipated performance at the 12th-century Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris on May 24 before an audience of several hundred people, including the parents of some of the choir members.
