Providence, RI -- Providence College has announced the appointment of six individuals to the College's Board of Trustees. They are:
Raymond T. Butkus, president of White Oak Consulting and a resident of Short Hills, New Jersey. A 1973 graduate of Providence College, Butkus holds a master of business administration degree from the University of Puget Sound and is a graduate of Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program. Butkus' general management career path has included leadership positions with Donnelley Marketing, Naviant Marketing Solutions, IntelliQuest, GEN Logistics Systems, and The Donnelley Group of infoUSA. He also was employed with AT&T in sales, sales management, and operational positions for nearly 20 years. He has authored a number of articles for business publications and has been a featured speaker on a wide range of technology and business topics.
M. Joseph Canavan, a resident of Branford, Connecticut, and the president and owner of Canavan Corporation. He is currently engaged as an advisor to the chairman and chief executive officer of Quest Diagnostics, Inc. A 1965 graduate of Providence College, Canavan holds a master of business administration degree from the University of Connecticut. A long-time leader in numerous Providence College alumni activities, he is a member of the Providence College President's Council and former president of the New Haven chapter of the College's National Alumni Association. Canavan has been engaged in the medial diagnostics field for more than thirty years. He previously served as founder and president for Diagnostic Medical Laboratory, Inc. and Vision Medical Imaging, Inc.
Sister Kathleen Cannon, O.P., associate dean of the College of Science at the University of Notre Dame and a concurrent associate professor of theology at the university. She also was elected secretary to the Providence College Corporation. A 1965 graduate of Ohio Dominican College, Sister Kathleen also holds a master of arts degree in religious studies from Providence College, and a doctor of ministry degree from The Catholic University of America. She has held administrative and academic posts at the University of Notre Dame since 1990, with prior teaching service at Catholic Theological Union, Albertus Magnus College, Wesley Methodist Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Ohio Dominican College.

Rev. Edward M. Gorman, O.P., pastor and prior of St. Catherine of Siena Church, located on East 68th Street in New York City. A 1986 graduate of Providence College, Father Gorman holds a master's degree in analytical chemistry from Wayne State University and a master of divinity degree from the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. A native of Illinois, he was ordained a priest in 1992. He previously served as a missionary for the Dominican Order of Preachers at several communities and churches in Africa. He also serves on the College Corporation.
Rev. Kurt J. Pritzl, O.P., dean of the School of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America. He also served as regent of studies for the Order of Preachers, Province of St. Joseph. The appointment marks his second term of service on the board. He also serves on the College Corporation. A 1974 graduate of Marquette University, Father Pritzl holds both the master of arts and doctorate degrees in philosophy from the University of Toronto. Ordained in 1991, he has held administrative and academic posts at The Catholic University of America since 1980, with prior teaching service at the University of Toronto. Father Pritzl is the author of numerous publications and has been a frequent guest lecturer at scholarly conferences.
Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, named eighth bishop of Providence, Rhode Island in March 2005 and by virtue of that appointment assumed a seat on the Providence College Board of Trustees and Corporation. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was ordained in 1973 and most recently served as the bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio. His previous service to the church includes pastoral and administrative assignments throughout Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania, and attended North American College in Rome with study at the Gregorian University, and graduate study at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of San Anselmo in Rome. He is the author of Without a Doubt, a popular column for the diocesan newspaper -- a collection of which has been published in book form -- and his writings also have appeared in a number of Catholic periodicals.
The Board of Trustees is one tier of Providence College's two-tier governing structure. There are currently 33 trustees, more than two-thirds of whom are lay persons. Twelve members of the Board of Trustees compose the Corporation. Under the College by-laws, the Board of Trustees is charged with oversight responsibility for policy-making, financial operations, long-range planning, and for recommending to the Corporation a Dominican Friar for election to the presidency of the College.
"We are very pleased to have the extensive leadership experience and the management, entrepreneurial, and pastoral skills of these individuals serving Providence College," noted Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., the recently-elected twelfth president of the College. "I know they will make significant contributions to our board." Father Shanley added, "I deeply appreciate their invaluable service and commitment."
