Providence, RI - Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. will be inaugurated as Providence College's 12th president during a two-day celebration to be held Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1, 2005.
The Inauguration Weekend--highlighted by the Installation Ceremony on September 30 at 3:00 p.m. in the Peterson Recreation Center--will feature a number of events designed to celebrate the College's commitment to its mission, the liberal arts, and its Catholic and Dominican traditions.
Plans for a series of academic, religious, and social events are being discussed by the Inauguration Committee and will be announced at a later date.
Father Shanley, previously an associate professor of philosophy at The Catholic University of America, was elected president on February 1, 2005 by the Providence College Corporation. The Rhode Island native began his responsibilities as president on July 1. He succeeds Rev. Philip A. Smith, O.P., who served as president for the last 11 years.
