Providence, RI -- Providence College welcomed 28 new, full-time faculty members to the campus this September for the 2005-06 academic year. A brief introduction of each follows:
Ordinary Faculty

Rev. Nicanor P. G. Austriaco, O.P., appointed assistant professor of biology and adjunct instructor of theology, holds a doctorate in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He attained his master's of divinity degree (M.Div.) in theology and his licentiate in sacred theology (S.T.L.) from the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. A native of the Philippines, his areas of academic interest are molecular genetics and moral theology. He entered the Dominican Order in 1997 and was ordained on May 21, 2004.

Dr. D. Russell Bailey, appointed director of Phillips Memorial Library and associate professor in the library, holds four advanced degrees, including a doctorate in German studies-with a doctoral minor in library science-from Louisiana State University (LSU). He holds master's degrees from the University of South Florida (library and information science), LSU (curriculum and instruction), and the University of Kentucky (German studies). Prior to coming to the College, he was associate university librarian for the information commons and an associate professor at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. His areas of interest are the library commons, European (Germanic) culture and education, and East Asian culture.

Dr. Joseph L. Bartoe, appointed assistant professor of biology, received a doctorate in pharmacology from the University of Washington. Prior to coming to the College, he served as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California-Santa Cruz and at Stanford University. His area of academic interest is developmental neurobiology.

Paola Cesarini, appointed instructor of political science, has completed all but her dissertation (ABD) towards a doctorate in political science from Columbia University. She holds master's degrees in political science and international affairs from Columbia. Most recently an adjunct professor at Bentley College, she also has taught at Columbia, the State University of New York, and New York University. Before embarking on an academic career, she worked with the World Bank and the United Nations. Her area of interest is comparative politics in Europe and Latin America.

LTC Paul C. Dulchinos, appointed professor of military science and department chair, earned an M.B.A. from Long Island University. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He has served as an active duty officer in the Army for over 19 years. His most recent assignment was at Fort Monroe, Va., where he served as the production division chief in architecture integration and management. He has held multiple positions in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

CPT Robert A. Gagnon, appointed assistant professor of military science, attained a bachelor's degree in history from Rhode Island College and received his commission as an armor officer from Providence College's ROTC Program. Most recently, he served for 13 months as a commander of a forward-deployed tank company team in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II, overseeing more than 150 soldiers.

CPT Neal Gouck, appointed assistant professor of military science, received his bachelor's degree in engineering psychology from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he was commissioned as an infantry officer. Before coming to the College, he was a rifle company commander, serving out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Dr. Ronald L. Jelinek, appointed assistant professor of marketing, earned both his doctorate in marketing and his M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut. Prior to doing his graduate work, he worked for KPMG LLP on Long Island. He also has worked on various consulting projects for financial services, pharmaceutical and industrial sales organizations. His expertise includes relationship selling, sales force automation, and customer relationship management.

Rev. Thomas P. McCreesh, O.P., appointed associate professor of theology, earned his doctorate in Semitic languages from The Catholic University of America and his licentiate in sacred theology (S.T.L.) from the Pontifical Faculty of the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. He began teaching at the College in January 2005. Before that, he was an associate professor of scripture at the Dominican House of Studies, where he also served as president from 1995 to 2003. His areas of expertise are biblical languages and the Old Testament.

Dr. Sharon A. Murphy, appointed assistant professor of history, received her doctoral and master's degrees in U.S. history from the University of Virginia. She has served as a post-doctoral fellow at the Library Company of Philadelphia's Program in Early American Economy and Society, as well as an instructor at Sweet Briar College in Virginia and at the University of Virginia. Her areas of specialty are 19th and 20th century U.S. social, economic, and business history.

Dr. Alli Nathan, appointed associate professor of finance, earned her doctorate in finance from Queen's University in Canada and M.B.A. and M.Sc. (mathematics) degrees from the University of Madras in India. Prior to coming to PC, she was a professor of finance at Nyenrode University in the Netherlands and an assistant and associate professor of finance at the University of Calgary in Canada. She also has served as a banking officer at the Reserve Bank of India. She continues to serve as a faculty member with the Institute of Canadian Bankers. Her areas of expertise include international finance, financial institutions management, banks and insurance firms, and risk management.

Dr. Andrew J. Peach, appointed assistant professor philosophy, holds doctoral and master's degrees in philosophy from The Catholic University of America. He most recently served as an assistant professor of philosophy at Saint Mary's University in Minnesota. He also was an adjunct assistant professor at Boston College and a teacher at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. His areas of interest include ethical theory, applied ethics, and the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Thomas Aquinas.

Dr. Despina D. Prassas, appointed assistant professor of theology, holds a doctorate in theology from The Catholic University of America and a master of divinity degree (M.Div.) from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. She has taught at the College the last two years as an adjunct assistant professor. Her areas of expertise are patristic theology and ecumenism.

Beatrice R. Pulliam, appointed assistant professor, earned her master's degree in library and information science from Simmons College. A reference librarian in Phillips Memorial Library, her past experience includes working as a graduate reference assistant at Simmons College and as a librarian and researcher for Stone Circle Films in Syracuse, N.Y.

College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., a member of the Providence College class of 1980, was appointed professor of philosophy. Fr. Shanley earned his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Toronto. He also holds a master of divinity degree (theology) and a licentiate in sacred theology (S.T.L.) from the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. Prior to assuming the presidency, he served as an associate professor in the School of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He also has taught at Providence College and the University of Toronto. His research interests include Thomas Aquinas, the philosophy of religion, metaphysics, Medieval philosophy, and ethics.

Dr. Thomas F. Strasser, appointed assistant professor of art history, holds doctoral and master's degrees in classical archaeology from Indiana University and a master's degree in classical languages from Loyola University. For the past nine years, he was a lecturer in humanities and history at California State University-Sacramento. He also has taught in Turkey and at Dartmouth College. His academic interests are in Greek, Roman, and Near-Eastern art and archeology.

Rev. John C. Vidmar, O.P., appointed associate professor of theology, holds a doctorate in sacred theology (S.T.D.) from the University of St. Thomas (The Angelicum) in Rome, Italy, and a master's from the University of Edinburgh. He served as a special lecturer at Providence College during the 2004-05 academic year. Prior to coming to the College, he held the positions of associate professor and academic dean at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., and taught at Ohio Dominican University. His area of interest is Church history.
Adjunct Faculty

Anthony E. Baker, appointed adjunct instructor of management, holds an M.B.A. and an M.A.T. from Johnson & Wales University. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Johnson & Wales University, the Community College of Rhode Island, Gibbs College, and the New England Institute of Technology. A retired U.S. Army master sergeant, he also has been a health care administration manager and a small business (seafood) owner. His areas of interest are leadership, management information systems, and small business management.

Dr. John J. Carroll, appointed adjunct professor of political science, received his doctorate from Brown University. Prior to coming to Providence College as a special lecturer in the 2004-05 academic year, he was a chancellor professor emeritus and the director of academic advising at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. His areas of expertise are state politics, civil liberties, and the legislative process.

Dr. Scott M. Cleary, appointed adjunct assistant professor of English, earned his doctoral and master's degrees in English literature from New York University (NYU). He also served as an instructor at NYU. His areas of interest are 18th-century British literature, editorial theory, and textual criticism.

Dr. Nina C. Coppolino, appointed adjunct assistant professor of history, earned her doctoral and master's degrees in classics from Fordham University. In the past, she has taught classics at the College of the Holy Cross and at Tufts University. Her area of interest is classical antiquity.

Robert L. Costanzo, appointed adjunct instructor of marketing, received his M.B.A. from Salve Regina University. Most recently, he served as director of sales development at The Providence Journal. He also has been an adjunct faculty member at Salve Regina University. His areas of interest are the travel, airline, cruise line, movie studio, gaming, and sports marketing industries.

Joy A. McGuirl-Hadley, a member of the Providence College class of 1978, was appointed adjunct instructor of management. She has completed all but her dissertation (ABD) towards a doctorate from Johnson & Wales University. She attained her M.B.A. from Bryant College, now Bryant University. Prior to coming to the College, she served as director of the Quaker Learning Center in Fall River, Mass. Her areas of interest are human resources, workforce development, and critical thinking.

Sandra Potter, appointed adjunct instructor of marketing, is pursuing doctoral studies in organizational development at Fielding Graduate University. She holds a master's degree in counseling psychology from Cambridge College and an M.B.A. from Bryant College, now Bryant University. She has taught at Bryant and at Babson and Bentley colleges. Her area of interest is entrepreneurship.

Dr. Sean S. Quinn, a member of the Providence College class of 1994, was appointed adjunct assistant professor of management. He earned his doctorate in applied management and decision sciences from Walden University. He attained a master's in sociology from Florida Atlantic University. He has served as an adjunct professor at Endicott College and Merrimack College. He also was a research associate at the Boston University School of Medicine's Cancer Prevention Control Center. His areas of interest are applied management and decision sciences, small business management, and organizational change.

Milena Radeva, appointed adjunct instructor of English, has completed all but her dissertation (ABD) in the doctoral English program at Pennsylvania State University. She earned a master's degree in English literature from Penn State. She served as a special lecturer at PC during the 2004-05 academic year and also has taught at St. Peter's College, New Jersey City University, and Penn State. Her areas of interest are modern British literature, modern American literature, Victorian literature, modernism and philanthropy, public sphere theory, women writers, and the theory of the gift.

Jason Stumpf, appointed adjunct assistant professor of English, earned his master of fine arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. He served as a special lecturer at Providence College during the 2004-05 academic year. He also has been an instructor at Washington University. His areas of interest are creative writing, modern and contemporary American poetry, translation, and literary editing.

Dr. Arthur P. Urbano, Jr., appointed adjunct assistant professor of theology, received a doctorate in religious studies from Brown University and a master of divinity (M.Div.) degree in theology from Harvard Divinity School. He has served as a visiting instructor of religious studies at Connecticut College. His areas of interest are the New Testament, patristics, and Greco-Roman religion and philosophy.
