Costumed PC Students Collect Canned Goods for Ronald McDonald House in Neighborhood “Trick or Treat for Cans” on Halloween

Providence, RI--More than 75 costumed Providence College students participated in a "Trick or Treat for Cans" service project on Friday, October 31, 2003. The students - members of the Providence College Student Congress and other volunteers - visited homes in the local neighborhood collecting canned goods for donation to the Ronald McDonald House in Providence.

The idea was conceived and coordinated by Student Congress President Andrea Essner, a senior political science major from Dexter, Missouri.  She coordinated a similar event in her hometown and found the idea eagerly embraced by fellow students at Providence College. Student leaders saw this service project as another opportunity for them to demonstrate in a tangible and helpful way the commitment PC students have to the city that is their "home away from home."

The opportunity to dress up for Halloween and go trick or treating with friends was inviting and nostalgic for many students. Notes Essner, "Whenever you can combine a good time with a good deed everyone wins."
