Providence, RI -- After nearly a year of planning and design work, Providence College has launched its new Web site—accessible at www.providence.edu . The user-friendly site offers a uniform format that is easy to navigate, designed to attract prospective students, and reflective of the College’s Catholic, Dominican tradition.
Designed by BigBad, a Web design company from Boston, Mass., known for its work with higher education institutions, the new Web site pages can be easily updated by authorized Web authors and editors using the Microsoft Content Management Server tool. The redesign was directed by the Web Site Redesign Advisory Team, comprised of representatives from all operating divisions at the College.
“The new Web site has truly been a collaborative effort by many, many people on campus,” explains Patricia S. Vieira ’75, executive director of media and community relations and co-chair of the advisory team. “BigBad presented Providence College with an outstanding opportunity to improve our local, regional and national reputation by working with us to create an effective, attractive and informative web site that mirrors the high standards and values of our institution. The new site architecture and design reflects our mutual commitment to create a Web site that is informative, attractive and engaging for all audiences.”
Richard N. Elkington, associate professor of photography, is the redesign team’s other co-chair.
Visitors who access the College’s home page will immediately see interchanging images of students and the greeting “transform society . . . transform yourself.” The message was developed in concert with members of the Dominican Community at the College.
The “PC Pop Quiz,” an interactive feature created by college staff that reveals “some answers that might surprise you,” and profiles of notable PC alumni also have a prominent place on the home page. Each feature will change as often as the screen is refreshed.
A link to an all-new campus-wide event calendar is featured on every page, as well as quick links to key on-line resources at the College.
The primary navigation links (Admission, Academics, Student Life, About PC, Athletics, Alumni, and Administration) and the global tools (Campus Directory, Site Map, Search, and Contact Us) appear consistently throughout the site.
Home page “audience” links for Parents & Families, Current Students, and Faculty & Staff bring the user to highlights or categories of information that are of particular interest to each group.
"PC’s world-wide community can be very proud of the new Web site," notes Vieira. "We have created an on-line presence for the College that reflects the challenge and promise of our Dominican-influenced liberal arts education.”
